  • Pizzaioli Tuesday 06/11/2013 Wine Tasting Great New Finds

Charles De Cazanove NV Brut Rose: $ 35.00
WS 91 Pts. - According to the Wine Spectator: Refined, with well-meshed acidity providing a backbone for delicate flavors of dried currant, graphite, green plum, meringue and grapefruit zest. Fresh, smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2020.

Chateau de la Maltroye 2010 Santenay Blanc 1er Cru La Comme: $49.00
We were absolutely stunned by the beauty of this Santenay Blanc. Brilliant, mineral, floral this Chardonnay of the most noble stock offers freshness and vigor. On the nose, notes of fern, chestnuts, and lemon zest abound. On the palate this wine is solid and energetic with aromas of lemon, wet stones and a hint of spicy oak. truly gorgeous and addictive.

    Domaine Duseigneur 2010 Lirac L'Astrolabe: $ 23.00
WA 92Pts. Made from 100% Syrah, Accordiing to the Wina Advocate, the 2010 Lirac Astrolobe is aged in both concrete tanks (90%) and old barrels (10%). It, too, was bottled without filtration. It reveals tremendous Syrah characteristics (especially for a southern Rhone) such as blackberries, acacia flowers, incense and camphor notes, a broad, expansive texture and superb intensity. Drink this impressive effort over the next decade.

La Mozza 2007 Aragone Toscana Maremma: $ 31.00
WA 92pts. - WS 90pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2007 Aragone is a blend of Sangiovese, Alicante, Syrah and Carignano. Racy dark red cherries, flowers, earthiness and licorice are some of the nuances that flow from this textured, expressive wine. In 2007, Aragone sits on the razor's edge of over ripeness; coming close, but never going over the top. A refined, polished finish serves to balance some of the more opulent qualities. This racy, sexy wine delivers incredible quality for the money.

California wines made by French winemakers. Flight of 6 $25

Le Pich 2011 Sauvignon Blanc: $ 20.00 bottle

Another superb wine made by Julien Fayard. This Sauvignon blanc is in the line of a great Bordeaux Blanc and indeed, it contains a dollop of Semillon Blanc and a splash of Musque.

Capture 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Fleuron: $40.00 bottle

Aromas of sweet red and black berry, cherry, huckleberry, cassis and a touch of spice with cloves are followed by notes of licorice and dark chocolate. The wine is pure, well-balanced and classic in its proportions. With multi-generational experience from Chateau Latour, our winemaking team understands the methods behind crafting classic Bordeaux-style wines with intense fruit from hillside vineyards at peak ripeness.

Daou 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles: $ 22.00 bottle

Winemakers Notes - Soft ripe blackberries and cooked black current dominate the initial aroma both on the mouth and nose. The seamless texture of vanilla bean and holiday spices combined with rich black fruit and cedar are evidence of true balance. There are firm tannins that are softened by bright acidity. Finally, there is an explosion of ripe raspberries and blueberries, with a hint of tobacco and pepper on the finish.

    Dominus 2009 Napanook: $ 50.00 bottle

WA 93 Pts.  -  According to the Wine Advocate: The 2009 Napanook is simply glorious. Sweet dark cherries, mint, tobacco, wild flowers and licorice all jump from the glass. The 2009 is a juicy, extroverted Napanook that impresses for its sheer pleasure and  total harmony. Layers of fruit continue to build to the huge, creamy finish. As good as the 2009 is today, I have a hard time thinking it won't be better in another few years. If anything, this is too serious a wine for an entry-level offering. The 2009 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Le Pich 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley: $ 37.00 bottle

Another gorgeous wine from Julien Fayard. The new vintage of our best selling cab is here! Still 100% Cab. It is just as delicious as the 2009, just a bit more intense at time of tasting. Tasting Notes - Dark, dense, luscious, graceful. Brambly blackberries, blueberry preserves, red and purple plums, sun-dried dates. Smoked herbs, graphite, roasted coffee beans, crushed violets. Cellar through 2032, or decant and enjoy with grilled lamb chops, braised beef, black bean soup or tomatoes Provencal.
